Columbus Day on Pine Island

My Zimbio

It's been a beautiful October here on Pine Island.  In 1492 Columbus first came to the New World (502 years ago this week).  29 years later, Ponce De Leo came to his second voyage on south west Florida, where he was wounded with what is believed to be poisoned arrow, in a clash with the Calusa Indian tribe.  This clash is rumored to have taken place in Pine Island Sound, off the coast of Pineland, on Pine Island, and Ponce De Leo sailed back to Havana, Cuba, where he is said to have died of his wounds, 531 years ago.

Sometimes I think about what these islands must have been like, 500 years ago.  A place to discover the archeological time-line of Pine Island is at the Randell Research Center in Pineland.  They have a wonderful visitor center and walking trail (and pier) looking out on Pine Island sound.  Their website is www.flmuh.efl.edu/rrc.
