Manatees swimming around Pine Island

Paddling in Matlacha Bay yesterday, my friend and I had the most amazing experience...we were surrounded by about a dozen manatees!  They are gentle, grass eating giants, some were longer than our paddle boards (about 12 feet long).  The warm weather and abundant sea grasses probably attracts them to these waters.    This part of Matlacha is well away from heavy boat traffic, also ideal for both paddlers and manatees.

Unfortunately, manatees were just declassified from "endangered" to "threatened" species.  If you don't have a paddle board, you can rent them from Gulf Coast Kayak in Matlacha.  Contact them at www.gulfcoastkayak.com.
