Bird Watching in Bokeelia

My Zimbio
Top Stories

After the wettest and rainiest January on record in Bokeelia (15+ inches of rain, more than 13 inches more than normal!) February has turned mild and sunny, a welcome relief.  I am back to my bike riding and bird watching.

Today was a very low tide at dawn due to full moon, banks of oyster beds were exposed and blue herons, ibis, roseate spoonbills and other birds were feeding on them.

There is a really great variety of bird species on Pine Island, just in a one hour bike ride around Bokeelia I saw this morning a great horned owl, wood peckers, kingfisher, pelicans, white pelicans, ibis, egret, great blue heron, little blue heron, sea gulls, spoonbills, osprey and blue jays.  And that is just the shore birds, we've also got lots of warblers, cat birds, cattle egret, killdeer, mocking birds, sparrows, cardinals, hummingbirds, fly catchers, swifts, swallows, crows, eagles, hawks and finches.  I think this variety means we have a good ecosystem here, nice habitats for birds (and people!)
