One of Pine Island's communities is Matlacha, actually a small island in itself, just east of Pine Island proper. Matlacha is a historic district and has many small and colorful waterfront cottages dating back to the 1930's. The bridge from the mainland to Matlacha, connecting Pine Island to the outside world was built in 1927. Today it is known as the "fishingest bridge" in the world.
