There are two good places to launch a vessel in Bokeelia. For a power boat, the most affordable option in Bokeelia is the public boat ramp on Barrancas Road, known as Lavender's Landing. Here you can launch a boat and park your vehicle and boat trailer all day for $10.00. T shirts, hats, charts, sunscreen and a small array of snacks and drinks are for sale. Also at Lavender's Landing are some small rustic rental cottages, and you can rent kayaks and canoes.
Lavenders Landing is also the office location of Tropic Star cruises, which offers daily cruises to Cayo Costa State Park and a Nature Cruise to Cabbage Key. The actual tropic star boats, Tropic Star and Calusa Star, leave from Jug Creek Marina at 16498 Tortuga Lane, Bokeelia, a couple of blocks away. At Jug Creek there is no boat ramp, but there is a ship's store, gas station to gas up your boat, and seafood for sale. For more info about Tropic Star cruises, visit their website at www.tropicstaradventures.com
A very nice place to launch a paddleboard, canoe or kayak is a "no-name" marina at the far end of Portobello Street, in Bokeelia (the next street over from Tortuga Street.) Here for only $5. per vessel you can put in your non-power boat. It just a short paddle to some of the most beautiful waters around. We've seen dolphins, many fish, sea turtle, and crab there lately. It is about 1 mile paddle to Calusa Island, which has picnic tables, a small beach, and fabulous views of Charlotte Harbor.
Next time, I'll post info about 4 Winds and Pineland Marina, the two largest marinas on Pine Island, but don't miss the little gems listed above, either.
