On this Memorial Day, I would like to remember my Dad, Gilbert J. Helwig, who served in the Army Air Corp during War World II in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. I have been re-reading a moving book of letters he wrote during that time from Spring 1942 through Spring 1946, he entitled "Raw World, A Backward Look at War". His title was a pun on World War. Or an anagram I think it may be called. Dad was an airplane mechanic and also wrote some very funny stories for Stars and Stripes magazine.
Here is a photo of him.
