On Pine Island Road, while just entering Matlacha, the gateway to Pine Island, this beautiful new fire station is opening. The tropical colors and design are really nice, but the greatest thing is better first responder/fire protection for those living in Matlacha. The addition of the Matlacha fire station brings to four the total number of fire stations on Pine Island. There are also fire stations in Saint James City, Pine Island Center, and Bokeelia, so almost all, if not all, homes on Pine Island are within 5 miles of a fire station, a criteria home insurance companies look at while establishing home owners insurance rates.
