March comes in like a lamb on Pine Island

My Zimbio
Top Stories

We had some much needed rain showers yesterday and last night, but today, March 1, is very warm with light breezes on Pine Island.

Almost as if on cue for recognizing Spring is here, I heard my first call of a whippoorwill this morning at 5 a.m.  Before long, there will be many of them calling to each other, every dawn and dusk.

I was glad to see the White Pelicans (our winter visitors) are still here, but they will probably be departing in great soaring flocks, fairly soon, a few weeks.  I am not sure where they go for the summer months, but my guess is Alaska and Canada.

These fellows were waiting for a hand out of cut sheepshead in the back bay of Jug Creek, Bokeelia, this week.

The wide diversity of birds that you'll find on Pine Island never fails to amaze me.  From the giant White Pelicans, to the small and retiring whippoorwill, to the wild peacocks I saw while out horseback riding yesterday, just one of the many pleasures of living on Pine Island!
