We are now under a hurricane warning though hopefully it will be minimal. For some reason, the National Hurricane Center website is down, but as of 11:00 AM on 8/18/08 the storm was 70 miles pretty much just south of Key West, and we are about 150 miles north of Key West. At the rate of 13 miles per hour, Tropical Storm or Hurricane Fay should be here in 15-16 hours, which would be VERY early (around 5 AM) tomorrow morning.
Just in case, my husband Marty is boarding up our barn. I took photo's of the proverbial "calm before" the storm and Pine Island Sound was smooth as glass with barely an east wind at 7:30 AM this morning. Now the wind has switched around to about 10 mph out of the southeast.
Will Fay be friend or foe? We could use the 4-8 inches of rain and hopefully even if it is a hurricane, it'll be minimal. Also, I always loved stormy weather, the impending sense of excitement, the dramatic build up of clouds, the wind and lightning. . . .well it looks like it will be a "dark and stormy night" here on Pine Island. I'll blog again tomorrow if my office power is on (power will be on in the house, as we have a whole house generator) Til then, Erika Foye
PS - Interestingly, if you look close at the photo above, it appears to have three moons setting. Two must be planets, I'll have to check what they could be.
